Birger Kaipiainen

Finland, 1950's

A rare ceramic egg. Signed BK.

Ceramic artist Birger Kaipiainen (1915 – 1988) was a  leading figure in the field of 20th century Nordic ceramics. His work is characterized by an extraordinary, colourful creativity that seems remarkably ahead of its time. Kaipiainen began his studies at the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki at the age of 17. In 1937 he was offered a position  in the art department  of the Arabia factory where he spent the next fifty years, interrupted by four years in the 1950s where he worked for Rörstrand in Sweden. Kaipiainen was awarded the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennial in 1960 and at the Montreal Expo in 1967. In his native Finland he was granted the Pro Finlandia medal in 1963 and the honorary title of professor in 1977.

His works are represented at Victoria and Albert Museum, The Brera Gallery, Museum of Contemporary Art Kyoto and Nationalmuseum in Stockholm among many other museums.
