About
Transylvanian-born Germany based artists, Gert und Uwe Tobias (b. 1973) are collaborators and identical twins. Together the Tobias brothers paint, sculpt, draw and make large-scale woodcuts. Their renewed and colourful take on traditional medias such as woodcuts and ceramics form the body of their work together with an almost nostalgic approach to making art, as each work is handmade by both sets of artists’ hands.

The sometimes mural-scaled woodcuts are on occasion entirely abstract, using repeated forms and shapes taken from Romanian folk-art decoration and 1920s Russian Suprematism, to create a sort of complicated geometric abstraction that looks like painting, or poster art, but is neither. Drawing on sources as diverse as popular culture, traditional Eastern European folk art and art historical movements such as Constructivism, the Tobias brothers create artworks that are both playful and haunting.

Gert & Uwe Tobias’ work is part of prestigious collections around the world including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA; UCLA, Hammer Museum of Art, Los Angeles, USA; Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany and Kupferstichkabinett Berlin, Germany.
