Hans J. Wegner
Flag Halyard easy chair with original green painted steel frame, wooden shoes, blue neck cushion and a sheep skin. Manufactured by Getama.
Danish architect Hans J. Wegner(1914-2007) – considered a pioneering furniture designer of the twentieth century – finished his apprenticeship with cabinetmaker H.F. Stahlberg in 1931 and went on to the Technological Institute and The School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. During his lifetime Wegner created some of the world’s most iconic chairs such as the Wishbone Chair, Peacock Chair and the Round Chair, simply known as The Chair, and he is often referred to as The Master of the Chair.
Wegner’s aesthetic was based on a deep respect for wood and its characteristics, and a vast curiosity about other natural materials that enabled him to bring an organic, natural softness to formalistic minimalism. Maybe therefore his designs are often described as ‘timeless’, ‘everlasting’ and ‘free from passing trends’.
Wegner’s furniture is exhibited in leading design museums around the world and has received numerous honors such as the Lunning Prize, the Grand Prix of the Milan Triennale, the Prince Eugen Medal, The Eckersberg Medal and The 8th International Design Award.
