Bjørn Wiinblad
Denmark, 1974

Candlestick in painted ceramic in the shape of a horserider.

About
Danish ceramist and painter Bjørn Wiinblad (1918-2006) graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1943. His artistic oeuvre includes ceramics, posters, set designs, costumes, illustrations, textiles and even a fountain created for Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen.

Although trained in Denmark, Wiinblad’s style was anything but Danish: while functionalism ruled the roost in Denmark and Europe, Bjørn Wiinblad went the other way, with a style dominated by wavy lines, bright colours and romantic worlds. Characteristic figures in his work include the whimsical round-faced people, often surrounded by natural elements: twining vines, floral wreaths, and fantastical trees.

Wiinblad’s work is represented in museum collections all over the world, including the Victoria and Albert in London, MoMA in New York and Design Museum Denmark in Copenhagen. Wiinblad was awarded the International Design Award in 1965 and American-Scandinavian Foundation’s Cultural Prize in 1995.
