His work is characterized by an extraordinary, colourful creativity that seems remarkably ahead of its time. Kaipiainen began his studies at the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki at the age of 17. In 1937 he was offered a position  in the art department  of the Arabia factory where he spent the next fifty years, interrupted by four years in the 1950s where he worked for Rörstrand in Sweden. \u003c\/span\u003eKaipiainen was awarded the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennial in 1960 and at the Montreal Expo in 1967.
