About
Industrial designer and architect Vico Magistretti (1920-2006) graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at Politecnico di Milano in 1945.
The Carimate chair – designed to decorate the golf club he designed same year (1959) – was one of Magistretti’s first products as a designer, but from the 1960’s he became a driving force in Italian design.

No matter the material, Magistretti attached great importance to high quality workmanship. For a design solution to be long-lasting and of high quality it had to be both beautiful and useful. Magistretti’s research into design and innovative experimentation with materials and space solutions, shapes and functions never seized, and he is considered one of the founding fathers of so-called Italian Design with a long catalogue of iconic furniture and lamps designed for manufacturers like Artemide, Cassina, de Padova, Fritz Hansen and Kartell.

Throughout the course of his career, Magistretti held prestigious professorships at the Royal College of Arts in London and the Domus Academy in Milan. His work has been acquired by important museums around the world, including MoMA in New York and the Victoria & Albert in London.
